The Lumsden Monarchs were dealt a 5-2 loss on home ice Friday night by the visiting Bethune Bulldogs in the first installment of the Mayor's Cup.
Saturday, the Narch's headed up the #6 to take on the Marlins on Teddy Bear Toss Night in Southey. It looked for a while that recent Monarch pick up Jesse Matlock's second goal of the weekend would stand as the only marker in the game. Lumsden took a 1-0 lead into the third period, but with about 14 minutes remaining, Southey took advantage of a 5 on 3 powerplay and sent the stuffed animals onto the ice. Scott Sauer scored the game winner shortly there after with a wrister top bunk from the right circle.
Jeremy Kwasny played stellar in net all night, with the Monarchs finally finding the brand of hockey they need to play consistently to be successful. Look for good things to come.
